Time before COVID appears far enough away to be alienating – possessing the tempos and cadences of some other civilizational order – especially as social upheaval and demands for racial and environmental justice magnify the precarity of our current moment. The time of lockdowns, isolation orders, and imminent mortal threat is a half-remembered morass of days both shorter and longer than it seems possible for them to have been. Taking these chronological fault lines as its subject, In Search of Lost Time reflects on our bewildering contemporary chronos, bringing together artists whose work expresses a visceral sense of temporal dissociation. In paintings, photographs, drawings and collage, order is imposed through repetition and seriality; close, careful seeing proves an antidote to anxiety and monotony; experimentation nods to the future unknown; celestial emblems of timelessness offer solace and perspective; and Kairos – critical moments of action – are brought into relief.
