Tamar Ettun’s multidisciplinary work in installation, drawing, sculpture, and performance examines somatic empathy, trauma-healing modalities, and ritual. Her ongoing (2020-present) project Lilit the Empathic Demon transliterates ancient Mesopotamian and Sumerian imagery and myth into a visual and performative language that invites viewers to explore, excise, and reflect on their personal traumas and the limits of their empathy.

Ettun has performed and exhibited widely, including at the Walker Art Center, The Chinati Foundation, The Watermill Center, Marjorie Barrick Musuem of Art, Sculpture Center, Madison Square Park, and The Jewish Musuem. She is the recipient of awards and fellowships from The Pollock Krasner Foundation, Interlude Artist Foundation, MacDowell Fellowship, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the Art Production Fund, among others. In April 2024, Ettun will be the featured artist at Printed Matter’s annual Art Book Fair.

Ettun founded The Moving Company in 2013, an artist’s collective creating performances in public spaces that encouraged social engagement by at-risk Brooklyn teenagers. She received her MFA from Yale University in 2010 where she was awarded the Alice English Kimball Fellowship. Ettun teaches at Columbia University School of Arts and Parsons School of Design.
