Maria Kozak’s intuited, psychological landscapes allude to an undercurrent of energy coursing through human existence. A descendant of dowsers, alchemists, and Polish mystics, Kozak’s fluid, moody paintings chart the cyclical interactions that emerge from classic dichotomies of the human condition. Driven by existential inquiries into the nature of reality and the construction of society, her subjects embraces the full spectrum of human experience—from the sacred to the profane, with carnivalesque abandon underscoring the foundation of an uncertain world. Kozak's work is characterized by dissolving forms, layered narratives and ambiguity and continues traditions of German Expressionism, Surrealism, psychedelia and the transavantgarde.

Kozak holds a Master’s degree in painting from the New York Academy of Art and is an alumni of NEW INC, the New Museum’s incubator for art + technology. Her work is represented in international collections and has been featured in Surface Magazine, Cool Hunting, Artsy, The Wall Street Journal, and Paper magazine. She has shown most recently at LETO Gallery in Warsaw, Dreamsong in Minneapolis and The Detroit Public Library. Kozak was awarded a NYFA/NYSCA Grant and a Schusterman Foundation Fellowship for her work in emerging technology. She is also currently the Editor-at-large of Przekrój, Poland’s oldest culture magazine.
